Asalha Puja Day,
the 15th day of the waxing moon in the 8th lunar month, is the day when Lord Buddha delivered his first sermon to the five ascetics, known as the "Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta" (Setting the Wheel of Dhamma in Motion). This day is considered when the Triple Gem was complete: the Buddha, the Dhamma, and the Sangha.
Buddhist Lent Day, the 1st day of the waning moon in the 8th lunar month, is an important day in Buddhism when Theravada monks vow to remain at one specific place throughout the rainy season for a period of 3 months as prescribed by the Vinaya rules, without staying overnight elsewhere.
Thai Buddhists consider this an excellent opportunity to make merit by visiting temples, offering alms to monks, and listening to Dhamma sermons. What makes this day special from other important days is the offering of light bulbs or candles for Buddhist Lent, and rain-bathing cloth (Vassika cloth) to the monks for their use during the Lent period.
